Increasing Access to Affordable, Nutritious Food

As with all of The Food Trust’s farmers’ markets, The Headhouse Farmers’ Market accepts senior citizens’ and WIC mothers’ Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers, making the market an affordable place to shop. The Headhouse market also accepts EBT Access cards – food stamp benefits in the form of a swipe card.

The Food Trust has been operating farmers’ markets since 1992, and currently operates farmers’ markets with community partners in diverse neighborhoods throughout the southeastern Pennsylvania area such as Haddington and Northern Liberties. The Food Trust has also assisted the communities of Catasauqua, East Lancaster and West Reading with the start up of their own farmers' markets. This year, including affiliate markets, The Food Trust is operating 30 farmers’ markets. The 2008 schedule of markets is available here.

By providing residents with fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrition-related educational activities and events, The Food Trust’s farmers’ markets directly impact an estimated 115,000 customers each year. The Food Trust’s staff provides nutritional information at our markets as well as shopping tips and education about the different types of fresh fruits and vegetables found at the market.

Supporting Local Farms

In addition to being a fun new place to shop for delicious, locally-grown food, the market is also a cornerstone in the Philadelphia region’s growing network of farmers’ markets. The Headhouse Market creates a new revenue source for our region’s farmers, who use the market as a place to grow their businesses and increase the economic viability of their farms. The success of farmers’ markets ensures the sustainability of local farms and enables The Food Trust to continue its mission of ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food. It’s worth noting that many of the farmers attending the Headhouse Market are farming on Preserved Farmland.

The Headhouse Farmers' Market is one of many opportunities to support local agriculture in the Philadelphia area this summer. For more information about local food events and particularly Buy Fresh, Buy Local Week visit: www.localfoodphilly.org
